Finishing an E-Textile

Kids and adults can have trouble predicting what parts of a project will be troublesome or simple, especially when they are doing something new. We were interested in identifying problems that arise when a group of kids are all designing and creating unique projec

March 30 - Finishing an E-Textile

Technique:  Stickies

Goal:  Understand what difficulties arise as kids work on finishing out an e-textile project. Is it easier to use a template like the first project or is it more fun to have freedom in your design? Was it helpful to have a practice textile?

Materials:

  • Stickies, Paper, Pencils, Markers, Rulers, Scissors

  • LilyPad kits, Fabric/Felt

  • Laptops

 

[3:30-4:00] Set Up

Camera (memory card, mic, 3 lights!)

Arrange tables for groups

 

[4:00-4:15] Snack Time 

 

[4:15-4:30] First Circle 

  • Ground Rules

  • Name, Age, “Question of the Day”

    • If you could make anything, no limits, what would you make?

  • What did we do last week? Write our code and start our project

 

[4:30-5:15] Design Session 

  • Finish e-textiles, cutting, sewing, embellishments

  • Testing and reflecting on the process, sticky notes (likes, dislikes, design ideas)

 

[5:15-5:30] Closing Circle Time 

  • Likes, Dislikes, Design ideas for kids e-textiles 

    • Respond to Coding

    • Respond to Sewing

    • Respond to project freedom vs. template

 

[5:30-5:40] Clean Up, Debrief, Take out SD card and put the camera away
