*Design Session 5

Make Some Noise!

Kids had fun learning to light up their circuit boards using coding language and were looking forward to programming buzzers.

How can I use a buzzer?

Not all the circuit boards come with buzzers, but the ones that are equipped with a buzzer can be linked to light and motion sensors. They can also make noise with the press of a button, or an on off switch.

Can kids play music?

We did not get to implement this plan, but same codes are available to code your buzzer with simple songs.

*Unable to implement due to library closures.

March 9 - Make Some Noise

Technique

Presentation

Goal

Practice and understand advanced codes – Tone, note, and patterns

  • Using a buzzer – how to make a sound

  • Make your own song with a buzzer

  • Control sounds by using a button/switch/light sensor

Materials

  • Stickies, Markers, Pencil, White paper (A4), Big paper, White Board Markers

  • LilyPad Kits

  • Laptop

[3:30-4:00] Set Up

Camera (memory card, mic, 3 lights!)

Arrange tables for groups

[4:00-4:15] Snack Time

[4:15-4:30] First Circle

  • Ground Rules

  • Name, age, “Question of the day”

  • What did we do last week? About simple codes we learned last week

  • Introduce practices that we are going to do briefly

    • Making your own sound

    • Combining what we learned last week with buzzer

[4:30-5:15] Design Session

I'm a musician [abt. 30 minutes]

  • Start with stickies, pencil and laptop.

  • Practice how to work with a buzzer;

    • Making sounds with example codes

    • Making your own sounds by modifying example codes

  • Collect the stickies from each group; like, dislike, and design idea

Being familiar with using different codes at the same time [abt 15 minutes]

  • Are you familiar with a buzzer, LED lights, light sensor, switch, and button on Lilypad?

  • Can you turn on/off your sound with button, switch, or light sensor?

    • Let’s combine the codes that learned today and last week.

[5:15-5:30] Closing Circle Time

  • Identify common/overlapping ideas from presentation

  • Next week: Designing final project

[5:30-5:40] Wrap UP

  • Clean Up, Debrief, Take out SD card and put the camera away
